Summer Adventures on a Budget: Free Ideas, Low-Cost Fun & Worthwhile Extras
Ideas to keep our kids active this summer

You don’t need a holiday abroad to give your kids a summer to remember. Some of the best memories are made with a bit of creativity, a handful of everyday items, and a willingness to join in the fun. Whether it’s exploring a local forest, building forts indoors, or signing up for a camp, a summer full of adventure doesn’t have to break the bank.
Here are some of my favourite ways to keep things exciting—most are totally free, and a few are well worth the small cost.
1. Beach Day? Make It the Wimbledon Final
Tennis rackets, footballs, maybe a frisbee—whatever you've got, bring it to the beach and let your imagination take over.
-
Draw a sand “tennis court” and pretend you're in the Wimbledon final.
-
Set up little football tournaments, obstacle runs or races with beach towels as finish lines.
-
Swap games when the kids get bored—low pressure, high fun.
It’s all about movement, laughter, and using what’s at hand. Then of course you jump into the water after.
2. Forest Park Fun: Free-Range Play & Gruffalo Hunts
One of my go-to adventures is heading to a nearby forest park with my youngest.
-
Go off the beaten track and pretend you’re searching for the Gruffalo.
-
Make your own scavenger hunt: find a leaf bigger than your hand, the smoothest stone, something red, something round.
-
Build fairy dens or little stick houses in the woods.
It’s completely free—and kids love the freedom to roam.
3. Indoor Adventure: Forts, Films & Family Games
When the weather turns or energy is low, make the inside just as exciting.
-
Build a blanket fort, crawl inside with some snacks, and pop on a movie.
-
Dust off your board games or teach your kids some classic card games.
-
I once taught my eldest to play chess—and now he’s passing it down to his cousins.
You don’t need gadgets or screens to create connection.
4. Add Variety with Local Days Out
While many activities can be free, it's also worth planning a few affordable day trips throughout the summer.
-
Think local farms, parks with splash pads, or nature trails with activity boards.
-
Keep an eye out for free entry days at museums or community events.
-
Even the occasional £10 family outing can feel like a huge treat when you’ve been mixing it up at home and outdoors.
It doesn’t have to be fancy—it just needs to feel different.
5. Camps That Go Beyond Just Sports
Finally, if you’re looking for structured, high-quality fun that covers physical activity, arts and crafts, wellbeing, and even creative writing, consider signing your child up for a CORE Kids Summer Camp.
-
They’ll build confidence, friendships, and skills—while having the time of their lives.
-
It gives you a break, too, knowing they’re safe, active, and happy for the day.
Yes, it’s a paid option—but one we think is well worth it for the experience and impact.
Final Thoughts
Summer doesn’t have to mean spending big. Most adventures can start with what’s already in your hands—a football, a picnic, a story, or just your time. And when you do want to invest in something a little bigger—whether it’s a day trip or a week at camp—make it something that feeds their imagination, movement, and joy.
Adventure isn’t about how much you spend. It’s about how much you show up.
