It All Starts with a Kick: The Power of Play, Sport & Showing Up
How the journey of play at home can turn into the love of sport and physical activity for life.

I still remember a post I saw years ago from a GAA's Facebook page. It stuck with me because it captured something so simple and yet so powerful:
“When a child wants a football, they’ll soon want goal posts. When they get goal posts, they’ll want their parents to come out and play with them. Then it’s the club jersey, shorts, socks… and joining the local team.”
It ends by reminding us that what children gain through sport—dedication, commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing—is truly invaluable.
Now, I get to watch that journey unfold with my sons. Josh, who’s 15, has found his love of sport through playing rugby and as a goalkeeper for his football team. I see the joy it brings him, not just in winning or performing well, but in the shared commitment and camaraderie that comes with being part of a team.
On the other end of the scale is Conlan, just 20 months old, whose world right now is full of wonder at the simplest things—kicking and throwing a ball, splashing in a paddling pool, or dancing anytime he hears music.
Last week, the three of us shared a beautiful moment during the good weather. We were in the at the beach together—Conlan giggling at the tiny waves hitting the shore, fascinated by the ripple of water each time he moved. He was completely immersed in the simple joy of filling his little watering can, lifting it with both hands, and pouring the water out again and again.
Meanwhile, I was booting a ball at Josh, who was waist-deep in the ocean, diving to save it with a grin on his face. It wasn’t a structured training session or a match, it was just play. Pure, joyful, meaningful play.
That’s the point, isn’t it?
Play doesn’t need to come with drills or medals. Sometimes it’s just being in the moment—laughing, moving, connecting. It’s these moments that spark the love for physical activity in children and allow it to grow naturally.
I've played sports all my life, but sports didn’t start with a club. It started at home.
It started in the back garden with footballs and swing balls, in the hallway with wrestling matches with my dad, and in the street with made-up World Cups, Wimbledons, and skate hockey (roller-blades and hurling sticks!).. It was built on half-times of dilute orange juice and custard creams outside on sunny days, and my parents were willing to be there and say yes to play. Well, sometimes Dad wasn't too happy with the floor beds or damage to his fence, which to us was a goal!
Now I’m on the other side of that journey. I’m the one buying the ball, playing in the garden, dropping my kids to training, and watching them learn the life lessons that sport brings. It’s full circle—and I finally understand just how much those small acts from my parents mattered.
Whether your child is chasing a ball on a field, building a robot, or just jumping into a paddling pool, remember: joy in movement is where it all begins. Sport and physical activity are not just about performance—they’re about connection, growth, and love.
Let them play. Be part of it.
Because it all starts with you.
